The Swiffa

My boy, Cal, from my hometown was messing around with garageband and created probably one of the illest raps I’ve actually heard in a while.

Take a listen and tell me his lyrics and word play isn’t amazing..

He has much talent when it comes to music as he is in a band and plays drums and guitar. We love freestyling together but this is some raw rap right here.

Please check the song out, it’s actualy jaw dropping.

Lost In The World (Tiesto Remix) – Kanye West

Tiesto is one of the most renowned DJs on this entire planet and anything he touches turns to diamond. Here he is remixing the track “Lost in the World” by Kanye West.

Has the club feel and absolutely you will hear this track on the radio stations.

Enjoy it here.

It might benefit listening to Benefit.

With lyrics that’ll scramble your brain and a consistant flow, Benefit can teach some of the mainstream artists what it’s like to really spit on a beat. As Benefit grew, so did his appreciation for creativity and culture. Moving to different cities, and attending a number of extremely different schools planted a deep seeded understanding of diversity in his young mind. You can see this in his songs. He isn’t new at all to the undergrownd scene, but I feel like he never had the exposure he deserved.

Here area few tracks by him that I enjoy.

Up & Coming: Top of the World

I thought I should start mentioning possible collaborations in the Hip Hop game and this one has got me really excited. Mike Posner (killer voice, catchy choruses, solid flow) Big Sean (Awesome Voice, Nice Raps, Fire Verses) & Diplo (FILTHY Producer, Panty Dropping Beats, SWAG). The song is going to be titled “Top of the World.” I’m still digging for a release date but through twitter and other sources all I’ve gotten is soon. In the mean time check out 3 songs by each that you’ll enjoy.

Flosstradamus & Diplo – Climax (Remix)

The duo known as Flosstradamus teamed up with Diplo to unleash this remix to Usher’s “Climax.”  If you haven’t heard of Flosstradamus yet, I suggest you do so by checking out their track “Original Don.” The duo fuses hip-hop beats with electro-house synths with some hints of the newest craze Moombahton.  I know what you are thinking, it doesn’t make any sense; however, I assure you that your ears will thank you for listening to Flosstradamus.

Timeflies: Interview + Timeflies Tuesday

I got to sit down and meet the two guys this past weekend for our Spring Concert some of the footage they took is used in this weeks video. The song is killer but I have an idea for what’s next week and if you’d like to know I think you should “Call Me Maybe.” AH see what I did there? Anyways, here’s the story I wrote for it as well as a picture of me with the guys! They’re genuinely awesome dudes who make some killer music so go download their stuff.

In a day and age where every genre of music is accessible through the internet it’s difficult for bands to get their name out. It’s a feeding frenzy for fame, and for as cruel of a world as the music industry is today the two men that make up Timeflies still manage to stay extremely humble and down to earth as they fight their way to the top.

The duo consisting of 23 year-old Cal Shapiro or “Cal” and 22 year-old Rob Resnick better known “Rez” sat in the basement of Blake Arena in a makeshift dressing room with a plateful of wings and pizza. They ate slowly and reflected on the road they’ve taken to get here. “ We work really hard, I think some people recognize that other people don’t,” said Rez, “ A lot of our friends tell us their jealous that we don’t have a real job, which is the worst thing to hear, when I think I work a lot harder then they do.”

Rob Resnick the man behind the melody. He is the laid back creative mind that creates all the beats and sounds that is Timeflies. Resnick history as a producer began at a young age. “ In middle school I was in a few rock bands and we didn’t want to pay for studio time so started building our own studio in our basement. It was really shitty but to be honest a lot of the same stuff we’d been working with up until Scotch Tape.” Resnick has acquired a newer taste for electronic and hip-hop music. He continues to use all of his influences in his music now.

Cal had a different but same approach as Resnick into the music world. “ I heard this 7minute freestyle by Jay-Z and Big L when I was about a sophomore or junior in high school and I memorized the entire freestyle and then people would ask me to do it.” It wasn’t until he was asked to freestyle his senior year of high school, that he decided it may be something.

The duo had always had music pumping through their veins. Beginning with piano lessons up until they met at Tufts University in music classes. They now live in the New York/New Jersey areas and are performing all over the country. The eclectic groups has used their experience to create something contagious.

Their road to success has been paved with their ability to dominate the video sharing site Youtube. The duo has been consistently putting out weekly freestyles, originally named “Timeflies Tuesdays.” The videos are a long process scrunched into, a short amount of time. “ It’s a different battle every Sunday or Monday to come up with the idea,” said Cal. Timeflies usually keeps their weekly freestyles up to date with current events going on around them. After the recent death of Whitney Houston they put together a tribute song called “ I Will Always Love You” Where Rez, the producer of the group sampled the original Whitney Houston track to make a whole new song. While Cal the vocalist/rapper took the chalky Valentine’s Day candy hearts to use the corny lines written on them as ideas to freestyle with.

Another notable freestyle they did was one for the late Steve Jobs CEO/Fonder of Apple Inc. Where the song was comprised of sound bits that you would hear any apple product make in today’s day in age, ranging from the standard apple ring tone to a recorded speech of Steve Jobs himself. The lyrics of the song slipped in different apple products and the hardware on them. Cal and Rez are doing something that isn’t typically done and that’s, show the pain-staking process of the music being made.

Rez discussed the song making process in more detail, “ I’d say like 48 hours max, we’ll start working maybe on Sunday night usually Monday afternoon and get it out late Tuesday.” The guys chuckled at each other’s responses with this “what have we gotten ourselves into” undertone behind the laugh. “ It wasn’t initially intended to be a song every week, it was just, let’s show people what were doing in the studio and then it quickly turned into, people caught onto the freestyles and then it was it’s got to be a full song.”

Hitting the road has been their current step in captivating audiences across the country. Their mid college circuit and loving every minute of it, even if it does cut into their Timeflies Tuesdays process. “We’re in a good position for that type of show, because we just graduated both partied in college enough, so going to colleges and having that mentality and that type of person it’s fun,” said Rez. Cal went on to say, “ It’s us, we’re the audience, so it’s perfect.”

The duo took Springfield College by storm, bringing just what they promised “More Energy” and “Loud.” Cal put his freestyle ability on the line rapping to a remixed version of smash hit “ Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. Referencing rhymes to Cheney Dining Hall, President Flynn, and even amped up the crowd by mentioning the week every Springfield College student anticipates Sti-Yu-Ka. Timflies is on the rise and for those of the students that attended, the chances they’ll see a show like that for free, in the future are slim to none.

The two-man team hits the road again, to continue opening for big name acts across the country. The way they left Springfield College it wouldn’t surprise me if they had acts opening for them in the near future.

Tupac hologram concert at Coachella 2012.

“This is not based on archival footage,” says Ed Ulbrich, chief creative officer at Digital Domain. “This is not him performing at some point. This a completely original, exclusive performance only for Coachella and that audience.” In other words, it’s a digital likeness of Tupac designed to interact with his co-performers and the crowd. At one point, Tupac even shouts “What the f— is up, Coachella!” even though the music festival didn’t exist until three years after his death.

The spectacular surprise has caused such a stir that there’s a chance we might be seeing a lot more of this “new” Tupac very soon. According to a Wall Street Journal interview with Ed Ulbrich of Digital Domain Media Group Inc.

Smith said he wasn’t allowed to talk about the creative aspects of the production — including how the hologram was able to seemingly perform the set in synch with Snoop and whether all the vocals were ‘Pac’s — but he did say that his company has the ability to recreate long-dead figures and visually recreate them in the studio. “You can take their likenesses and voice and … take people that haven’t done concerts before or perform music they haven’t sung and digitally recreate it,” he said. – MTV.com

To me this is unreal. A must see for any hip hop junkie. He is seen along side Snoop Dogg to perform “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted”.
